Math Teaching Qualifications
In order to qualify for a North Dakota teaching certificate, all candidates must complete a state-accredited teacher education program and pass the applicable standardized exams, including the Praxis I, or Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).
Credentials & Exams
North Dakota offers two levels of certification:
- Initial License: This two-year license is issued to first time applicants who meet the minimum requirements for North Dakota licensure.
- Regular License: This five-year license is issued to teachers who have taught in a North Dakota school for 18 months and have met all other requirements.
- Reciprocity: A two- or five-year license is issued to applicants holding a teaching license issued by another state IF such license was obtained through a regular accredited teacher education program. Applicants who have not been tested in their previous state, and were issued an out-of-state license after 2002, are required to take North Dakota’s standardized teaching examinations.
Alternative Certification for Math Teachers
North Dakota also offers an alternative route for individuals with non-education specialty degree. In order to qualify, applicants must
- Complete a state approved education program at the graduate or undergraduate level.
- Pass the Praxis I, or Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) in reading, writing, and mathematics.
