Math Teaching Qualifications

In order to qualify for the traditional route certification in Vermont, prospective teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree, satisfactorily complete a teacher preparation program and pass the Praxis I and II tests.

Credentials & Exams

• Testing Requirements: All teachers are required to achieve passing scores on the Praxis I Test Basic Skills Test, the Praxis II Subject Area tests and Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching. Please note: After August 2014, the Praxis I test will be replaced by Praxis Core. Click here for more information.
• Initial Certification: There are two primary means by which prospective teachers can fulfill the requirements for an Initial teaching certificate.
  • Traditional Route: Complete a state-approved teacher preparation program through a bachelor, post-baccalaureate or Master’s degree program AND obtain a recommendation from the institution attended at the time of graduation
  • Reciprocity: Candidates can also be eligible to receive an Initial teaching certificate by fulfilling the requirements for Vermont’s reciprocity route to certification. At minimum, qualifying applicants must have at least three years of certified teaching experience in another state.

Alternative Certification for Math Teachers

Peer Review Program: Vermont has created the “Peer Review Program” as an alternative route to licensure for individuals interested in becoming teachers but have not completed a teacher preparation program. In order to qualify, applicants will have to satisfy the requirements stipulated under the Core Teaching Standards for Vermont Educators along with other content area knowledge requirements.
